SJ Access is a multi-lingual city-wide initiative that is building awareness and providing residents and students access to all things digital: Internet, free Wi-Fi, and digital literacy programs and opportunities.

The City of San José Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Services in partnership the San José Public Library is enhancing outdoor Wi-Fi access at several branch libraries, community centers, and parks.

Connecting to the Network

  1. Find the "Settings" on your device.
  2. Select the wireless network you would like to join:
    • For community center locations, this is "FreePublicAccess".
  3. If you see a notification specifying the need to "sign in", select that notification.
  4. Wait for the "Acceptable Use Policy" page to appear on your screen.
  5. Read the page and select "Accept" if you agree to the terms.

The City is also working with East Side Union High School District (ESUHSD) and the Santa Clara County Office of Education (SCCOE) on the expansion of the Access East Side Community Wi-Fi Project, which targets the James Lick and Overfelt High School attendance areas, one of the City’s districts with the highest need for computer and internet access among its residents. Access to Wifi in the Overfelt attendance area will begin at the start of the academic year.

emergency Broadband Benefit

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) started a program to help eligible families pay for Home Internet service during the COVID-19 Pandemic. 

The Emergency Broadband Benefit (EBB) includes:

  • Up to $50 a month discount on Internet service and equipment rental
  • Up to $75 a month discount on Internet service and equipment rental for households on qualifying Tribal Lands
  • Up to $100 for a computer or a tablet, one-time payment (Offered by human-I-T only)

YOU ARE ELIGIBLE FOR the EBB BENEFIT, IF YOU MEET ONE OF THE FOLLOWING:

  • Participant in FCC Lifeline; Participant in an existing affordable Home Internet offer
  • Child enrolled in the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) 
  • Receive CalFresh (food stamps) or Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)
  • Receive Medi-Cal or Supplemental Security Income (SSI)
  • Student with a Pell Grant
  • Have a Household Income Under $49,000 / year
