2022 California Building Codes are effective Jan. 1, 2023

Effective Jan. 1, 2023, the 2019 state building codes will be replaced by the 2022 codes.

The California Building Standards Commission updates the State building codes (California Code of Regulations, CCR, Title 24) every three years. 

Plans submitted after Jan 1, 2023 will be reviewed under the 2022 codes (including Building, Electrical, Plumbing, Mechanical, Residential, Fire, Reach Code CALGreen, and Building Energy Efficiency Standards).

2022 California Building Codes

The 2022 codes were published on July 1, 2022 and became applicable to all building permit applications made on or after January 1, 2022.

The updated 2022 codes adopted by the City of San José are:

• 2022 California Residential Code - CCR Title 24 Part 2.5
• 2022 California Electrical Code - CCR Title 24 Part 3
• 2022 California Mechanical Code - CCR Title 24 Part 4
• 2022 California Plumbing Code - CCR Title 24 Part 5
• 2022 California Historical Building Code - CCR Title 24 Part 8
• 2022 California Existing Building Code - CCR Title 24 Part 10

The 2019 and 2022 building codes can be viewed at the Building Standards Commission web page. 

Changes to the San José Municipal Code can be viewed in the amended ordinance to adopt the 2022 California Codes.
