Welcome to Citywide Planning!

Citywide Planning is a key function of the Planning Division. At the direction of the City Council or as mandated by state law or the Municipal Code, we:

• Continually evolve San Jose's General Plan and perform analyses for Area and Specific Plans and Urban Villages.
• Update city ordinances pertaining to land use and development, including the Zoning Ordinance
• Maintain data and maps relating to development and forecast San Jose's development trends.
• Work with other City departments, nonprofits, neighborhoods, art groups, and other partners to embrace placemaking and activities that connect people with places and public spaces in San José.

Our approach is community-based and we seek input from our diverse community.
