Purpose

The City of San José relies on the work of qualified consultants who are contracted by private applicants, property owners and community groups to perform professional services like historic resource identification, evaluation, historical documentation and historic property preservation and treatment. Qualified consultants must meet the Secretary of the Interior’s Professional Standards for Historic Preservation in architecture, history, architectural history, historic architecture and/or archaeology.

Listed below are historic resources consultants who have expressed interest in providing such private professional services in the City of San José. This is not a list of pre-approved consultants. The City of San José maintains a separate list of consultants that have Master Agreements to provide historic resources services for publicly funded, City-initiated projects.

USE OF THE CONSULTANT LIST

This list is offered as an informational courtesy to assist in finding historic resource consultants. Before contracting for services check the consultant or firm’s area/s of specialization in relation to the proposed scope of work.

Please note that professional services in the area of archaeology are typically contracted directly with an environmental consultant on the City of San José’s list of approved environmental consultants and not by private applicants or owners.

It is recommended that if historic resource consultant services are needed for technical reports to support an environmental document, they should also be contracted directly with the environmental consultant.

This list does not constitute an endorsement by the City of San José of any consultant or firm represented on the list.There may be other historic resources consultants who are not listed here and the list should not be seen as all-inclusive. Applicants are free to contract for services with any qualified consultant. Please note that the City of San José independently reviews all documents submitted by consultants for adequacy and acceptance.

NOTE TO CONSULTANTS -  Qualified consultants should have a good understanding of Santa Clara County and San Jose history, and the city’s architectural heritage and resource types. It is important that consultants are  familiar with the City’s Historic Resources Inventory and historic resource classifications, Historic Preservation Ordinance, and Envision San José 2040 General Plan policies for Historic Preservation.
