Street & Easement Vacation

The process of vacation or abandonment of public service easements or rights-of-way is governed by State and municipal codes.  Certain information and findings must be met before public easements/rights-of-way can be vacated to private use.

The street vacation process can be separated into two categories: Regular & Summary.  Each process is specified by the Government Code, State of California, Streets & Highways Code, Section 8300.

The Development Services Division of Public Works is responsible for administering the vacation process.  If you are interested in having a public street or easement vacated (abandoned), refer to the resources below for more information. You may also visit the Public Works Counter at City Hall to to check if staff would support such vacation.
