Prevailing Wage Basics
How much should I get paid doing my work?
Your rate of pay is determined by the type of work you are performing. If you perform multiple types of work during your shift, you may qualify for a higher rate for some of that time.
What is prevailing wage? What is the basic hourly rate? What are fringe benefits?
Prevailing wage rates are made up of two parts - the basic hourly rate and fringe benefits. The basic hourly rate is money you earn per hour on the job. Fringe benefits are the additional contributions you receive from your employer, such as health care, vacation pay, and pension and training funds.
What is my classification?
Your classification is determined by the type of work you are performing. For a full list of prevailing wage classifications, visit the California Dept. of Industrial Relations website or contact our team.
How many breaks should I get and for how long?
You should have at least a 30-minute meal break once you have completed 5 hours of work. If you work at least 3.5 hours, you are entitled to a 10-minute break. You can take a second 10-minute break after completing 6 hours of work.
What’s the difference between an apprentice and a journeyman?
An apprentice is a worker that is registered with a training program for a particular craft. A journeyman has completed all apprentice requirements and thus is entitled to a higher rate of pay, increased responsibility, and additional privileges.
