San Antonio Street Safety Project

Project Description

In 2020, San Antonio Street, from 17th Street to Jackson Avenue, was repaved as part of the Department of Transportation's (DOT) annual pavement maintenance program. When a roadway is resurfaced, it must be restriped as well. So, DOT uses this opportunity to restripe the roadway in a way that adds protection for people who walk, roll, and ride bikes. These changes to the roadway were conceptualized during the En Movimiento and Better Bikeways planning efforts.

Planned enhancements include:

  • Traffic circles: Traffic circles are often safer, more efficient, and less costly. They are also more aesthetically appealing than conventional intersection designs. And most importantly, they reduce the types of crashes that result in injury or loss of life.
  • Curb extensions or bulb-outs: Bulb outs extend the sidewalk into the roadway at intersections to shorten crossing space for walkers, rollers, and bike riders. They also encourage drivers to make more gradual turns.
  • High visibility crosswalks
  • Protected bike lanes: Protected bike lanes better separate bike riders from people driving cars.
