Monterey Road Transit Project
Project description
Monterey Road is a high fatality and injury corridor, with several traffic deaths per year. Monterey Road is also one of San José’s highest bus ridership corridors. The project area is Monterey Road and First Street from Keyes Avenue to Ford Road. The Monterey Road Transit Lane Project aims to:
- Improve safety for all users
- Improve transit speeds and reliability
The Department of Transportation (DOT) is leading the project, with assistance from the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA). The project focuses on low-cost changes to improve safety and speed up transit along Monterey Road.
The first phase of the project is the Monterey Road Transit Study. The study phase will be completed in fall 2023.
The second phase is planned to start in early 2024. The main improvements include:
- Bus lanes and bus boarding islands
- Upgrading existing bicycle lanes to protected bicycle lanes
- Upgrading existing crosswalks
- Add protected intersections or bulb-outs at select intersections

- 2022
- Summer: Developed street cross-sections
- September: First round of community engagement meetings
- Fall: Traffic modelling
- 2023
- Winter: Develop conceptual design for Keyes Road to Curtner Avenue segment
- May: Second round of community engagement meetings
- Summer: Develop conceptual design for Curtner Avenue to Ford Road segment
- September: Third round of community engagement meetings
- Fall: Complete conceptual design
- 2024
- Winter: Final design begins
- 2025
- Spring: Complete final design
- 2026
- Summer: Construction begins
