West Taylor Street Corridor Safety Improvement Project

Project Description

As part of the 2024 pavement maintenance program, DOT will make significant changes to West Taylor Street between The Alameda and Stockton Avenue. The project will include the following improvements:

  • Repair the pavement
  • Refresh the striping
  • Add new buffered bike lanes
  • Add a center turn lane
  • To accommodate these improvements, we will remove one driving lane in each direction, converting the street from four lanes to two lanes. No parking spots will be impacted.

The goals of this project are to increase safety for all, and to encourage more people to walk and bike. These improvements also accommodate people driving and parking, and also repair the pavement for everyone using the street.

City Goals

The West Taylor Street project is supported by the following City plans:

  • Envision San José 2040 General Plan
    • Goal TR-1.1: Accommodate and encourage use of non-automobile transportation modes to achieve San José’s mobility goals and reduce vehicle trip generation and vehicle miles traveled (VMT)
    • Goal TR-1.3: Increase substantially the proportion of travel using modes other than the single-occupant vehicle, including at least 10% of trips by bike by 2030 and at least 15% by 2040
  • Better Bike Plan 2025
    • Safety
    • Mode shift
    • Equity
  • Vision Zero San José
    • Reduce and eliminate severe injuries and deaths
  • Climate Smart San José
    • Strategy 2: Reduce the miles we travel in our vehicles by at least 20%
  • Move San José
    • Strategy 1: Safer streets
    • Strategy 6: Low-stress bike facilities and slow streets
    • Strategy 9: Enhance bike connectivity

These plans help us encourage people of all ages and backgrounds to walk, roll, bike, and use public transit. These goals, and this project, will ultimately help us create a more sustainable and vibrant San José.
