Combating Anti-Asian Hate Crimes

The Office of Racial Equity is steadfastly committed to collaborating with community members and other key stakeholders on strategies to combat hate crimes and violence against Asian and Pacific Islander communities in San José and promote the safety and well-being of individuals facing racism, harassment, and violence.

Below you will find a list of tools, resources, and critical information compiled by partner organizations for the benefit of city residents. This information will expand and grow as new resources are identified.

Report an act of violence

  • To report crimes and/or suspicious activity, you can call the Santa Clara County’s Anti-Hate Hotline at 408.279.0111.

  • In all cases of emergencies, you can also call 9-1-1.

  • If you are in need of mental health support, the Behavioral Health Call Center is the entry point for access to all Santa Clara County behavioral health services. They provide support for individuals and families who are in crisis; considering suicide; or struggling with mental illness, substance use, or both.

    • Services are available in 24 hours, 7 days a week, including holidays
    • Language assistance services, free of charge, are available to you.
    • Call 800.704.0900 (TTY: 800.855.7100 or 711).

Here are some precautionary safety recommendations to keep in mind from the Stop AAPI Hate Initiative:

  • Avoid carrying large amount of cash on person at all times.
  • Recognize your surroundings by being aware when on foot.
  • Shop with a family member of loved one.
  • Lock doors once inside your vehicle.
  • Avoid leaving valuables inside your car at all times.
  • Locate exits and entrances while grocery shopping.
  • Notify family members or loved ones of plans in advance.

The Asian Pacific Policy & Planning Council, Chinese for Affirmative Action, and SFSU’s Asian American Studies Department have created an additional method for reporting acts of violence against AAPI communities at:

  • The tool is available in multiple Asian languages, including Chinese, Vietnamese, Japanese, and Tagalog

  • Physical copies of the handbooks in multiple languages will be available for distribution through local AAPI nonprofits and community centers.
