Applying Racial Equity

What is a Racial Equity Plan?

While local governments may consider themselves fair and just, the legacy of past unjust actions has caused persisting problems, and people of color continue to fare worse than their white counterparts in every area that government touches: housing, employment, education, justice, and health.

After a period of research and information gathering, a Racial Equity Plan will identify necessary structural changes and beneficial partnerships that enable greater racial equity. From procurement to hiring to promotional practices to the rollout of government services, every aspect of government can ask questions about whether services and programs are delivered with awareness to promote racial equity and avoid racial bias.

Many City Departments have an existing Racial Equity Action Plan. These plans are intended to be practical and useful in outlining Departmental goals and programs that advance racial equity within its workforce and services.
