Legalizing Construction

Prior to undertaking any property improvement projects, property owners should understand that it it is illegal to undertake certain kinds of projects without first securing the appropriate permits.

Planning permits are typically required for projects that are beyond cosmetic on the exterior of buildings, including windows, walls, stairways, and decks. They are also required when making most changes to historical properties or to remove ordinance size trees.

Building permits are typically required for any structural work and for subtrade work -- electrical, plumbing, and mechanical improvements.

Permits or clearances from Public Works may also be needed for grading and changes to driveways and sidewalks.
