Summary: Vietnamese American Organization Community Day Event Survey & Outreach
Event Focus: This community day event brought together Vietnamese residents to promote community involvement, celebrate culture, as well as, entertain, unite, inspire, and empower the community.  City Housing staff tabled at the event to gather share information about the City’s Housing Element and gather feedback on resident housing issues and needs.

Meeting focus:  At the July 27 virtual meeting, staff provided an overview of the Draft 2023-2031 Housing Element document and facilitated breakout sessions to hear from community members. They answered questions and captured comments and feedback to use in producing the final plan.

Meeting focus:  The public was invited to this virtual meeting. Staff from Housing Department and Planning Division informed this City Council committee of the status of the AFH and Housing Element work; the approval process and project timelines; and examples of types of strategies that could go into the draft Housing Element. The meeting included time for public comments.  

Documentary – A Reckoning in Boston
Available Through February 16, 2022
Event focus: "A Reckoning in Boston" is now available online. The film explores systemic racism, gentrification, displacement, and other issues that are relevant in many cities, including San José. Our hope is that this event will encourage conversations about fair housing and participation in other learning and engagement opportunities as part of the Housing Element Update process.

Meeting focus: Fair Housing is a new and required focus of every city's Housing Element in California. It refers to policies and actions that combat discrimination, overcome patterns of segregation, expand choices, and address racial and economic disparities in housing. It involves both increasing investment in underserved communities and fostering inclusive neighborhoods throughout the city. Join us to learn about this work and share your thoughts and any experiences with fair housing issues. Your input will inform the Housing Element Update and related Assessment of Fair Housing Plan. This meeting provides a presentation followed by time to talk with City staff and each other. Spanish and Vietnamese language interpretation will be available.

Event focus: Following two residents who enrolled in the Clemente Course in the Humanities, this documentary explores Fair Housing and social justice issues in the city of Boston. Event focus: This presentation highlighted the history of segregation in San José, including practices and policies that have resulted in—and continue to perpetuate—a pattern of segregation by race and socioeconomic status. After looking at the government’s role in creating segregation, panelists discussed the City’s responsibility to address it, including Fair Housing laws that require cities to address racial segregation.

Community Meeting #1 – Introduction to the Housing Element 
Thursday, September 2, 2021 – 6:00-7:30 p.m.   

Meeting focus and summary:  This meeting provided an introduction to the Housing Element update process. Attendees had breakout sessions to talk with City staff and each other. Spanish and Vietnamese interpretation was available. Approximately 90 people attended and shared feedback on housing needs, issues confronting our community, and their vision for housing in the future. We heard that: Housing is too expensive; homeownership is out of reach for many; displacement and segregation continue to impact communities; planning processes are too complicated; and we need a wider range of housing types and affordability levels throughout the city. Attendees shared ideas for outreach including working with schools, coordinating with community-based organizations, and opportunities for in-person meetings and events. Attendees were asked to share one word that described their vision for housing in the future, and this resulted in this word cloud:
