Government AI Coalition

About the GovAI Coalition

The GovAI Coalition is composed of government members from local, state, and federal agencies united in the mission to promote responsible and purposeful AI in the public sector.

As government agencies look to artificial intelligence (AI) to improve services, the GovAI Coalition strives towards a more just and beneficial technological future for all. AI tools have the potential to make government services more responsive, efficient, and accessible to all, but AI also poses serious risks.

To improve the lives of the people we serve while protecting our communities against AI risks, it is vital that public agencies establish safeguards for the responsible use of AI.

The GovAI Coalition is committed to:

    1. Using AI for social good,
    2. Ensuring ethical, non-discriminatory, and responsible AI governance,
    3. Promoting vendor accountability,
    4. Improving government services, and
    5. Fostering cross-agency collaboration and knowledge sharing.

      Our Founding

The GovAI Coalition started as an idea by the City of San José in 2023. While asking companies for more information on their products surrounding privacy and data usage, vendors were hesitant to provide the information. Staff from the City of San José Digital Privacy Team shared these concerns to government staff in other agencies, who shared the same concerns. Proposing to join forces, San José initiated the first meeting of what would become the GovAI Coalition. This meeting was held the first week of November 2023 with about 50 agencies.

The GovAI Coalition went public March 13, 2024 publishing a set of deliverables any organization could use to help jumpstart their agency with responsible AI practices. The first published templates and resources included the Coalition’s Open Letter, AI policy and practices templates, and the AI FactSheet.
